    Study Notes

    Upper Respiratory System

    • Rhinarium is the moist part of the nose
    • External nares are the nostrils, which are the external openings of the respiratory tract
    • Direct airflow and prevent inhalation of foreign bodies
    • Philtrum is the vertical groove between the sides of the nose and upper lip
    • Alar folds, also known as "wing folds", are flaps of skin on the outer aspect of the nares that help direct air for olfaction

    Upper vs Lower Respiratory Tract

    • The respiratory tract has two parts with different functions: upper and lower respiratory tract
    • Upper respiratory tract consists of nasal cavity, sinuses, oral cavity, larynx, and pharynx
    • Lower respiratory tract consists of trachea, bronchi and bronchioles, and lungs
    • Note: For this course, trachea is considered part of the lower respiratory tract, unlike in the textbook

    Nasal Cavity

    • Extends from nares to pharynx
    • Two sides separated by the nasal septum
    • Floor of the nasal cavity is the hard palate
    • Nasal turbinates make air turbulent, remove particles and warm air up
    • Lining of the nasal cavity is respiratory mucosa, which is ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells
    • Respiratory mucosa warms and moistens air, traps foreign particles, and produces mucus
    • Olfaction (smell) occurs in the nasal cavity
