Study Notes
What is SONAR?
- SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging
How SONAR Works
- Uses ultrasonic sound waves to determine direction, distance, and speed of underwater objects
- Consists of a transmitter and a receiver fitted on ships or boats
- Transmitter produces and transmits ultrasonic sound waves
- Waves travel through water, strike underwater objects, and get reflected back
- Reflected waves are received by the receiver on the ship
- Receiver converts ultrasonic sound into electrical signals
Calculation of Distance
- Time difference between transmission and reception is noted
- Time and velocity of sound in water give the distance from the ship to the object
Uses of SONAR
- Determines the depth of the sea
- Searches for underwater features such as hills, valleys, and icebergs
- Locates submarines and sunken ships
