Study Notes
Understanding Your Computer
- Computers process data into information
- The four main functions of a computer are: input, processing, output, and storage.
- Data is a representation of facts, figures, or ideas
- Information is data that has been organized or presented in a meaningful way
- Computers use binary language, which consists of just two digits: 0 and 1
- A bit is a binary digit, either 0 or 1
- A byte a unique combination of 8 bits (0s and 1s)
- Computer data is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes, and petabytes (PT), with 1 KB = 1024 Bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, etc.
- Transistors are electrical switches made from semiconductors, materials that conduct electricity or act as insulators.
- Integrated circuits (chips) are tiny regions of semiconductor material that support a large number of transistors.
Types of Computers
- There are two basic types of computers: portable and stationary
- Portable computers include cell phones, tablets, and laptops
- Stationary computers include desktops and all-in-one computers.
- A mainframe is a large, expensive computer that supports many users simultaneously, often used by businesses that manage large amounts of data.
- A supercomputer is a specially designed computer that performs complex calculations extremely rapidly, often used for weather forecasting.
- An embedded computer is a specially designed computer chip that resides in another device, such as a car, drone, or thermostat.
Input Devices
- Input devices allow entering data and instructions into a computer
- Popular input devices include keyboards, touch screens, styluses, virtual keyboards, mice, touchpads, and game controllers.
- Touch screens work by changing the physical state of the screen when touched, registering the location of the touch as a command.
- Digital cameras, camcorders, mobile device cameras, flatbed scanners, and webcams are popular for image input.
- Microphones with voice recognition software are popular for audio input.
- Sensors such as magnetometers, proximity sensors, accelerometers, and gyroscopes are also forms of input.
Output Devices
- Output devices send data out of the computer in the form of text, pictures, sounds, and videos
- Monitors, printers, and speakers are examples of output devices.
- Monitors use pixels to display images.
- Aspect ratios and resolutions (720p, 1080p, 4K) define the quality of the display.
Storing Data and Information
- Hard disk drives (HDDs) are the primary storage device, nonvolatile, and can be internal or external.
- Solid-state Drives (SSDs) offer faster performance than HDDs.
- Portable storage options include flash drives and flash memory cards.
- Cloud storage stores data online, offering free and paid options.
- Optical storage options include CDs, DVDs, which hold more data than CDs, and Blu-ray discs (BDs).
Connecting Peripherals to the Computer
- Common computer ports include Thunderbolt, USB, Ethernet, and HDMI.
- Thunderbolt offers transfer speeds up to 20 Gbps, while USB 3.1 offers transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
- Ethernet port supports speeds up to 10,000 Mbps.
Power Management and Ergonomics
- Battery drain is a concern for portable devices, impacting battery life.
- Power supply transforms wall voltage to the voltages required by the battery or computer chips.
- Computers can be in sleep mode, where documents in RAM remain in RAM, or hibernate, where documents are stored to the hard drive.
- A warm boot restarts a computer, while a cold boot starts a computer that was powered off.
- Ergonomics is the study of how a work environment affects the user's physical health and comfort.
- A comfortable and ergonomic workspace is essential for extended computer use.
