Study Notes

Vijnan & Bhautikshastra

Vijñāna, which can also be written as vijñaanaa and means 'knowledge', is a broad concept encompassing all forms of understanding. In Sanskrit, it often refers to knowledge acquired through experience, study, or observation. In Indian philosophy, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism, Vijñāna is considered one's awareness or consciousness of oneself and others. It is often associated with five kinds of knowledge: perception, inference, comparison, verbal testimony, and non-perception.

Bhautikashastra, sometimes spelled Bhoothika Shastram, is a term used in ancient India to refer to the physical sciences such as physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, geography, medicine, materials science, engineering, agriculture etc., which have evolved from very old observations made by mankind since time immemorial. This scientific knowledge was evolved through keen observance of nature and its phenomena by early humans, who were always curious about their natural surroundings, and wanted to know more about them. Thus, bhautikashastra can be seen as the combination of applied physics and practical information technology, which is involved in constructing human civilization.

In modern times, both these concepts continue to hold significance in scholarly discourse. For instance, physicist Albert Einstein stated that our scientific understanding must correspond to truth within reality, and this correspondence has been foundational in developing theories, including his theory of relativity. Similarly, Bhautikashastra continues to play a crucial role in technological advancements across various fields like physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, engineering, commerce and many more.

The intersection between Vijnana and Bhautikashastra lies in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the world around us. Both disciplines involve careful observation and reasoning, leading to better comprehension of realities and possibilities present in Nature. As humanity evolves further, these two subjects will no doubt continue to shape our understanding of the universe in ways we never thought possible.
