Validity
- Validity refers to the extent to which an instrument measures what it is intended to measure.
- Different types of validity exist:
-
Content Validity: Assesses whether the individual items of a test represent the construct being measured.
- Face Validity: A type of content validity, it looks at the items of the test and examines whether each item logically seems to measure the construct.
- Factors that affect face validity include font size, spacing, paper size, and other details to prevent distractions.
- Face Validity: A type of content validity, it looks at the items of the test and examines whether each item logically seems to measure the construct.
-
Construct Validity: Measures the extent to which a test measures a theoretical construct or concept as intended.
-
Criterion-Related Validity: A method of assessing validity by comparing scores with another established measure of the same trait or skill.
-
Concurrent Validity: Measures how well a particular test or measurement agrees with an established test administered at the same time.
-
Predictive Validity: Predicts future behavior based on a procedure.
-
-
Reliability
- Reliability refers to the consistency of measurements.
- A reliable test produces similar scores across various conditions, situations, and evaluators.
- Types of reliability:
-
Test-Retest Reliability: Measures the consistency of a test over time. Subjects should yield the same result when tested at different points in time.
-
Split-Half Reliability (Internal Consistency): Evaluates whether different parts of the same test yield similar results in subjects. Subjects’ scores on some parts of the test should correlate with their scores on other parts.
-
Interrater Reliability: Consistency of results from more than one rater (observer) Assessing specified behaviors, such as hitting, crying, yelling, or getting out of a seat.
-
Alternate Forms Reliability (Parallel-Forms Reliability): Reliability obtained by administering two equivalent tests to the same group of examinees. These tests must have matched difficulty. Ideally, the time between administering the two tests should be brief.
