Study Notes
Syncope
- Syncope is a transient, self-limited loss of consciousness due to a sudden decrease in blood flow to the brain.
- The onset of syncope is rapid, lasting briefly, and recovery is spontaneous and complete.
- Causes of syncope can be broadly categorized into neurally mediated (reflex), orthostatic hypotension, and cardiac syncope.
Neurally Mediated Syncope
- Also known as reflex or vasovagal syncope.
- Characterized by a temporary change in the body's reflexes responsible for maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis.
- Often involves episodic vasodilation, decreased cardiac output, and bradycardia.
- Commonly associated with a prodrome (presyncope) which includes symptoms like lightheadedness, faintness, dizziness, and visual disturbance.
Orthostatic Hypotension
- Caused by a failure of the autonomic nervous system to maintain blood pressure during position changes.
- Autonomic failure leads to a chronic impairment of cardiovascular reflexes.
Cardiac Syncope
- May be caused by arrhythmias or structural heart diseases.
- Can be a result of bradycardia (slow heart rate) or other arrhythmias.
- Structural abnormalities that can lead to syncope include valve disease, cardiomyopathy, and congenital heart defects.
