Study Notes
Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, organization, and communication of data. It's all around us, from sports scores to political poll results, weather forecasts to stock prices. We can see it everywhere we look! A statistician uses a variety of tools like probability theory, calculus, algebra, geometry, etc., to draw conclusions based on data. When collecting information, they consider three factors - accuracy, precision, and bias. After gathering data through surveys, questionnaires, observation, experiments, simulation, sampling, etc., statisticians analyze them using methods such as descriptive statistics (displaying facts), inferential statistics (drawing conclusions), and predictive analytics (forecasting). They also create graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, tables, etc. to show what's going on with the numbers; these are called statistical graphics. Statistical significance means that you have found something interesting when looking at your data; this is different from being accurate. For example, saying "The average income of people living near their workplace has gone up by $5 per year," is accurate; however, if only one person was surveyed, it wouldn't necessarily mean much. On the other hand, sayings things like "In the last five years, the average income of people living within ten miles of their workplaces has gone down by $10 per year" would probably be more significant because so many people were counted. In conclusion, statistics is all about making sense out of numbers - whether those come from personal experiences or official sources - and drawing meaningful conclusions.
