Normal Gait
- Gait is defined as the progressive movement of the entire body, created by coordinated movements of body parts. It's also known as human locomotion.
- Every individual has a unique gait pattern.
- Fundamental purposes of gait include supporting the head, trunk, and arms; maintaining balance; achieving safe ground clearance; generating/adjusting forward velocity; and absorbing shock.
- Prerequisites for normal gait include equilibrium (maintaining an upright posture), locomotion (initiating and maintaining rhythmic stepping), musculoskeletal integrity (normal functioning of bones, joints, and muscles), and neurological control (sending and receiving signals for coordinated movement using visual, vestibular, auditory, and sensory-motor feedback).
- Forces for gait include muscular force, gravitational force, forces of momentum, and floor reaction force.
Gait Cycle
- The gait cycle describes the repetitive movement of walking, from one heel strike to the next on the same limb.
- One complete gait cycle includes two phases:
- Stance phase (approximately 60% of the cycle)
- Swing phase (approximately 40% of the cycle)
- The stance phase is characterized by heel strike, foot flat, mid-stance, heel off, and toe-off. Subphases within stance phase include initial contact, loading response, mid-stance, terminal stance, and pre-swing.
- The swing phase consists of acceleration, mid-swing, and deceleration. Subphases within the swing phase include initial swing, midswing, and terminal swing.
Gait Terminology
-
Temporal Variables describe time-related aspects of gait, including:
- Stance time: time foot is in contact with ground
- Swing time: time foot is not in contact with ground.
- Stride & Step time: time for one stride/step
- Cadence: steps per minute
- Walking speed per minute
-
Distance Variables describe the distance properties of gait including:
- Stride length
- Step length
- Step Width
- Degree of toe-out
Events in Stance & Swing Phases
- Stance Phase events: heel strike, foot flat, mid-stance, heel-off, toe-off. Subdivisions within the stance phase include initial contact, loading response, mid-stance, terminal stance, and pre-swing.
- Swing Phase events: acceleration, mid-swing, deceleration. Subdivisions within the swing-phase include initial swing, midswing, and terminal swing.
