Study Notes
Immunoglobulin Classes
- IgG provides long-term immunity after vaccine or illness recovery and crosses the placenta to provide passive immunity in newborns
- Found in blood and extracellular fluid, IgG also provides lymphatic immunity
- IgA is present in external secretions such as tears and saliva, and is found in all mucous membranes
- IgA provides passive immunity for breastfed infants
- IgM is produced first during an infection, and IgG production follows afterwards
- IgM is found in blood and lymph
- IgD is an antigen-specific receptor on B lymphocytes
- IgE is associated with mast cells or basophils and plays a key role in allergic reactions
- Mast cells release histamine during allergic reactions
Test your knowledge on the different types of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, IgE) and their roles in the immune system. Learn about their functions in providing immunity after vaccination, across the placenta, in external secretions, and more.
