Study Notes

Gender-Based Violence

  • Gender-based violence (GBV) is any harmful act committed against a person's will due to sex or gender.
  • GBV stems from power imbalances and socially constructed gender differences.
  • It includes physical, sexual, and spiritual harm, threats, coercion, and deprivations of freedom, occurring in both public and private settings.

Basic Concepts

  • Biological Sex: Refers to biological/anatomical features and differences between sexes. This includes external/internal reproductive organs, chromosomes, and hormones.
  • Gender Identity: How a person defines themselves based on mental and psychological traits, feelings related to their gender, and how they want to be perceived. Gender identity can align or not align with biological sex.
  • Sexual Orientation: Emotional and sexual attraction to other genders. This includes attraction to the same gender, different gender or all genders.
  • Gender Expression: How a person expresses their gender (attire, behaviors, and actions) to the outside world. Gender expression is not always consistent with biological sex or gender identity.

Traditional Sex Roles

  • Socially and culturally determined roles, responsibilities, and learned behaviors related to gender.
  • Reflects expectations of social and cultural attitudes about gender.
  • This influences societal actions and behaviors expected based on gender.
  • Informed consent means agreeing to something freely and voluntarily, understanding the consequences, and possessing equal power.
  • Informed consent also implies being aware of and exercising the right to say "no".
  • Acts of GBV often occur without true informed consent (due to duress or coercion).
  • Children under 18 are not considered mature enough to give true informed consent due to the implications of decisions.

GBV Classification

  • Rape: Non-consensual penetration involving a penis or other body part. This can also include penetration with objects.
  • Sexual Assault: Any non-consensual sexual contact which does not involve penetration. (e.g., attempted rape, unwanted touching, or unwanted kissing)
  • Physical Assault: Any non-sexual physical violence. (e.g., hitting, choking, burning, or using weapons).
  • Forced Marriage: Marriage without the full and free consent of one or both parties. Includes forms like child marriage, early marriage, and traditional arranged marriage.
  • Denial of Resources/Opportunities/Services: Preventing access to essential resources, opportunities, and/or services based on gender.
  • Emotional/Psychological Abuse: Infliction of mental or emotional harm or injury (e.g., threats, harassment, intimidation, abuse, or manipulation)

Child, Early and Forced Marriages

  • Child marriage is a marriage conducted by a minor under the age of 18 (religiously or civilly).
  • Early marriage is involving marriage under the age of 18, where the parties are not sufficiently equipped due to their immaturity to give appropriate consent concerning their physical, emotional, and psychological development and their lack of knowledge on the related topic.
  • Forced marriage is a marriage that occurs without the full and free consent of one or both individuals involved.
  • Factors associated with child, early, and forced marriages include poverty, lack of education, gender inequality, harmful social norms/traditions, and conflict/crisis environments.
  • Symptoms of child marriage include the difficulty accessing education, changes in physical appearance, helping with household chores, and being kept inside more to prevent them from interacting with the outside world.
  • Other associated emotional consequences can include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, and self-harm tendencies.
