Epiglottitis
- An acute inflammation of the epiglottis, a serious condition

Signs and Symptoms of Epiglottitis
- High fever
- Unwell, distressed, irritable child
- Stridor (high-pitched, noisy breathing), especially on inspiration
- Difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing, drooling
- Child may sit upright with head and chin forward
Management of Epiglottitis
- Treat as a medical emergency.
- Requires immediate hospital admission via a priority call.
- NEVER place anything in the child’s mouth.
- Emergency care focus is on maintaining airway and providing oxygen.
- Avoid procedures that may distress the child, as this can worsen upper airway compromise.
