Speech Styles
- Speech style is the form of language used by a speaker, ranging from formal to informal
- Speech style is influenced by the level of formality of the situation
- Different speech styles are appropriate for various contexts
Five Types of Speech Style
- Frozen: A very formal style used in formal settings, using fixed and unchanging expressions
- Examples: National Anthem, Holy Mass, religious rites, oaths, creeds
- Formal: Straightforward, formal language avoiding slang and contractions. Speakers must prepare beforehand
- Examples: Sermons in Mass, graduation speeches, announcements in school, declarations, political speeches
- Consultative: A semi-formal style where speakers provide background information and expert advice. There is an active participation between speaker and listener.
- Examples: One-on-one tutoring, job interviews, conversations between a doctor and a patient, therapy sessions
- Casual: Informal language used among friends or peers. Slang, vulgarity, and contractions are common.
- Examples: Everyday conversations with friends, personal messages, emails to friends
- Intimate: Used for close relationships with no social barriers, with the use of informal and intimate language.
- Examples: Sharing secrets with friends, conversations between family members, personal conversations
Speech According to Purpose
- Informative: To provide information or knowledge to the audience, exemplified by reports, lectures and demonstrations. Topics can range from objects to events and processes.
- Persuasive: To convince the audience to accept a view, opinion, or take action.
- Entertainment: To relax and entertain the audience, usually with a central theme.

- Pros: Well-prepared, no chance of missing words
- Cons: Can sound mechanical, limited eye contact, may lack emotion
-
Memorized Speech: Speech delivered from memory, often desired for a polished presentation.

- Cons: Can be challenging to memorize, risk of forgetting parts, may appear robotic
-
Impromptu Speech: Speech delivered with little or no preparation, often knowledge about the topic is expected.
- Pros: Natural delivery, conversational, ability to engage audience
- Cons: Requires strong quick-thinking skills, may be performed poorly
-
Extemporaneous Speech: Speech is planned and rehearsed, uses an outline/notes, allowing for a more natural delivery.
- Pros: Organized, prepared, but more natural than reading
- Cons: Requires strong oratory skills to sound natural, knowledge of the topic is essential
