Hospital Admissions

  • Elective Hospital Admission: Non-emergency, planned admission, typically at the request of the patient or their primary care physician, to accommodate the patient's convenience and availability of hospital resources.
  • Examples of elective hospital admissions: cosmetic surgeries, joint replacement, non-urgent medical procedures, and some diagnostic tests (e.g., colonoscopy).

Day Case Admission

  • Also known as ambulatory surgery or same-day surgery.
  • Planned medical procedure that can be completed within a single day, with discharge the same day without requiring an overnight stay.
  • Examples of day case admissions: minor surgeries such as cataract removal, hernia repair, or endoscopy.

Maternity Admission

  • Pregnant patients, can be planned or unplanned.

Outpatient Hospital Services

  • Not a traditional form of admission, but worth mentioning.
  • Do not involve overnight stays, usually provided in a clinic or hospital setting.
  • Examples of outpatient services: OPD, routine check-ups, diagnostic tests (blood tests, X-rays), minor surgical procedures (skin biopsy), and physical therapy.

Observation Status Admission

  • Patient not immediately admitted as an inpatient, but kept under observation for a certain period.
  • Needed to monitor and assess the patient's condition first.
  • Examples of observation status admission: syncope, severe headache, vomit, abdominal cramps, chest pain, or patient with diagnoses where a less than 24-hour stay in the hospital could be sufficient.

Importance of Knowing the Type of Admission

  • Informed decisions as a patient and healthcare professional.
  • Determine the relative's reliability as a source of information, if applicable.

Possible Nursing Diagnoses

  • Fear, anxiety, altered family process, self-care deficit, disturbance in self-concept, social isolation.
  • Anyone who must leave the security of their previous pattern of living for care and treatment in a healthcare agency is likely to be experiencing any of these nursing diagnoses.
