Diphthongs

  • There are two types of diphthongs: centering and closing
  • Centering diphthongs move from high vowel sounds (/ɪ/, /ʊ/, /e/) to a central vowel sound (/ə/)
  • Examples of centering diphthongs:

Closing Diphthongs

  • There are two types of closing diphthongs: front closing and back closing

  • Front closing diphthongs move from front vowel sounds (/e/, /a/, /ɔ/) to a close vowel sound (ɪ)
