Study Notes
Rainforest Conservation in China
- Tropical rainforests exist in China, specifically in Xishuangbanna (southern Yunnan), Hainan Dao, scattered regions of Guangxi and river valleys in southeastern Xizang.
- These areas are considered the northern limit of the tropical rainforest region in Southeast Asia.
- A hot and humid climate is characteristic of these regions.
- Xishuangbanna is the largest area of tropical rainforest in China, internationally recognized as such.
Xishuangbanna Rainforest
- Area: 19,223 km²
- Relief: Mostly mountainous (90%), with lowlands making up 10%.
- Altitude: Mostly 600m above sea level
- Climate: Tropical monsoon climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters; high rainfall, mostly in summer.
- Plant and Animal Species: Over 5,000 plant species and 2,000 animal species (16% and 25% of China's total, respectively). Includes the tallest tree in China, the Wangtianshu. Also home to Asian elephants.
Hainan Dao Rainforest
- Area: 6,593 km²
- Relief: Ranges from 40m to 1,800m above sea level, including mountains such as Wuzhishan.
- Climate: Maritime tropical monsoon climate, with long and hot summers and mild winters; high rainfall, mostly in summer.
- Plant and Animal Species: Over 4,600 plant species (15% of China's total; including 600 species endemic to Hainan Dao) and over 570 animal species (7% of China's total). Includes Hainan gibbons.
Problems Faced by Chinese Rainforests
- Primary forest area has been declining over the past few decades.
- Loss of forest cover (hectares) in Xishuangbanna and Hainan Dao over the past two decades is shown in figures (loss quantified).
- Deforestation due to demand for cash crops, wood and paper products, leading to farming and plantation activities.
- Commercial logging destroying rainforests for timber is an issue.
Environmental Impacts of Rainforest Loss
- Forest Fragmentation: Loss of connectivity between rainforest areas leading to reduced biodiversity.
- Reduction in Biodiversity: Loss of habitat for various species; some listed as endangered (e.g., Indochinese tiger, northern white-cheeked gibbon).
- Soil Degradation: Reduced nutrient levels and increased acidity due to reduced litter and chemical use.
- Reduced Rainforest Canopy: Climate change impact, fewer foggy days with lower humidity.
Measures to Conserve Chinese Rainforests
- Government measures, including protected areas, national parks, and enforcing forestry laws.
- Individual actions like consuming fewer rainforest products, supporting sustainably-sourced goods, donating to conservation groups, and participating in ecotourism and tree-planting programs.
