    Guideline for Fire Station Door Usage

    • All Toronto Fire Services (TFS) personnel are responsible for ensuring that fire station doors are used properly.
    • Company Officers are responsible for ensuring crew members follow this guideline.
    • The Duty Officer is responsible for reporting required maintenance of fire station doors.

    Apparatus Bay Doors

    • Apparatus bay doors should be closed while apparatus are in the fire station.
    • Apparatus bay doors may be opened while TFS personnel are present in the apparatus bay or in front of the fire station on the ramp area.
    • If a situation arises where it is necessary to have an apparatus bay door open for any length of time, it shall be raised not more than 1 metre.
    • The apparatus door remote control located in the apparatus should be operated by the apparatus driver only.
    • Control of the apparatus bay doors should be the responsibility of the firefighter assigned to carrying out the duties of floor watch.

    Testing Apparatus Bay Doors

    • Apparatus bay door manual release mechanisms shall be tested twice per year on February 1st and August 1st, and as directed by the Duty Officer.

    Other Doors

    • All fire station doors equipped with a self-closing device and leading to the interior of the building from the apparatus floor shall be closed immediately after passing through, in accordance with Fire Code regulations.

    Repairs and Maintenance

    • If a door that causes a security/safety concern or an apparatus bay door requires repair or maintenance during regular business hours, the Duty Officer should notify the City of Toronto Facilities and Real Estate Division (FRED).
    • For emergency repairs, the Duty Officer should call 338-FRED (3733) and select from the menu to speak to a representative.
