The Trial of Rizal
- The trial of Rizal began on December 26, 1896, in Cuartel de España, a military building.
- Rizal was not allowed to know his accusers, and the trial was seen as a pre-determined verdict.
- The court was composed of seven military officers, led by Lt. Col. Jose Togores Arjona.
- Present at the trial were Jose Rizal, six other officers in uniform, Lt. Taviel de Andrade, Judge Advocate Capt. Rafael Dominguez, Lt. Enrique de Alcocer (Prosecuting Attorney) and Josephine Bracken.
- Judge Advocate Dominguez opened the trial.
- Atty. Alcocer reiterated the charges against Rizal, urging the court to sentence him to death.
The Investigation and Trial
- The preliminary investigation on Rizal began on November 20, 1896.
- Rizal was presented with two types of evidence - documentary and testimonial.
- The documentary evidence consisted of fifteen exhibits.

Rizal's Manifesto

- The manifesto is often known by the phrase: “Hindi kasagutan ang madugong labanan, karunungan ang sagot sa kalayaan” (“Bloody struggle is not the answer, wisdom is the answer to freedom”).
