Study Notes
Photographer Nicolas Bruno creates The Somnia Tarot, a series of 78 conceptual photographs depicting the classic Rider Waite tarot deck, inspired by his experience with sleep paralysis and dream journals. The series is on display at Haven Gallery in New York until March 21, 2021, and Bruno has also created his own deck of cards available for pre-order. Bruno's interest in tarot cards began when he discovered his great-grandmother's deck at his grandmother's house as a child. The coronavirus quarantine inspired Bruno to challenge himself creatively and work efficiently, developing an efficient system of creating props and costumes for his shoots. Bruno spent a month studying the tarot meanings and drawing out concepts for each piece, consulting his dream journal to tell the stories of each image through the characters he sees within his sleep paralysis experiences. All of the male characters in the series are self-portraits, and the female characters are either his sister, girlfriend, or a close friend. Bruno completed the final image in early December 2020 after planning and scheduling each shoot day to include up to three images. The Tower was the most memorable image for Bruno, as it was one of the first images he shot for the series and involved building a burning dollhouse and tying it to his back in the frigid weather. Bruno's previous series on sleep paralysis and dream journals parallel his tarot card photography as the characters and symbols within his Sleep Paralysis imagery tell the story of each tarot card. Bruno hopes to immerse viewers in the story of the classic tarot in an entirely new way, offering a glimpse into the world he creates through his conceptual photography. Bruno plans to open pre-orders for tarot decks of the series in late March on somniatarot.com, along with a hardcover book, and release a new video documentary on his artwork and process in late April.
