    Study Notes

    What Is the Respiratory System?

    • The respiratory system is the part of the body that handles breathing, allowing us to laugh, talk, sing, and live.
    • It brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide, which is necessary for cells to grow, work, and function.

    Parts of the Respiratory System

    • Air enters the body through the nose or mouth and passes through the throat and into the windpipe (trachea).
    • The trachea splits into two branches that go into each of the two lungs.
    • The branches in the lungs continue to split into smaller branches, eventually ending in thin air sacs called alveoli.

    Alveoli

    • Alveoli are small air sacs that look like clusters of grapes and are covered with tiny blood vessels.
    • Oxygen from inhaled air enters the blood vessels and travels to every part of the body.
    • Carbon dioxide moves out of the blood and into the air sacs to be exhaled.

    How Breathing Works

    • The body takes care of breathing automatically, even when sleeping or unconscious.
    • The diaphragm, a large flat muscle between the chest and belly, tightens and moves down to pull oxygen-filled air into the lungs when inhaling.
    • The diaphragm relaxes and moves up to push carbon dioxide-filled air out of the lungs when exhaling.
    • The diaphragm helps facilitate breathing approximately 20,000 times per day.

    Voice Production

    • The voice box, located at the top of the trachea, contains vocal cords.
    • When air from the lungs moves over the vocal cords, they vibrate, producing sound.
    • The air exhaled from the lungs helps make the sounds heard when talking, singing, and laughing.
