Early Life and Education
- Born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines
- Seventh of eleven children to Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso Realonda
- Family was considered one of the wealthiest in the region
- Early education was at the Justiniano Aquino Cruz's school in Biñan
- Later studied at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila
- Graduated with a degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Santo Tomas
- Pursued further studies in Europe, including ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg
Personal Relationships
- Known for his romantic relationships with several women, including:
- Segunda Katigbak, a childhood sweetheart
- Leonor Rivera, a cousin who inspired the character of Maria Clara in his novel "Noli Me Tangere"
- Josephine Bracken, an Irish woman who became his wife in 1896
- Maintained close relationships with his family, particularly his mother and sisters
- Had a strong bond with his friend and fellow reformist, Ferdinand Blumentritt
Nationalism and Reform
- Became involved in the Philippine reform movement, advocating for:

- In 1896, Rizal was arrested and put on trial for his involvement in the Philippine Revolution
- Executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896, at the age of 35
- His martyrdom sparked widespread outrage and further fueled the Philippine Revolution
