Sign languages are often very sophisticated systems with their own grammars, lexicons, and rules of usage. These too serve as tools of social interaction among those who utilize them regularly, just as do verbal languages.

Learning a new language opens up possibilities beyond simply understanding its speakers. A person might discover aspects of his or her native tongue that were previously unknown due to cultural constraints or conventions. Additionally, learning a second language allows individuals to appreciate foreign art forms—poetry, novels, music, movies, etc., that could otherwise remain unintelligible.

The study of language is known as linguistics, and there are various branches within this field including sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, historical linguistics, computational linguistics, developmental psychology, and applied linguistics. Each branch focuses on specific aspects of how and why we communicate using our languages. As technology advances, computer science continues contributing to linguistic analysis.
