The Cell: The Basic Unit of Life
The cell is the fundamental unit of all life. It is a small, self-contained unit of life that consists of cytoplasm enclosed within a membrane. The term "cell" comes from the Latin word "cellula," which means "small room." The study of cells and their structure and function is called cell biology.
Discovery of the Cell
The cell was first discovered in 1665 by Robert Hooke, who observed small, box-like structures when he examined a thin slice of cork under a microscope. These structures reminded him of the cells, or rooms, in monasteries, and he named them "cells." Hooke's discovery of cells laid the foundation for the development of the cell theory.
Cell Theory
