The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023

  • The Act received the assent of the President on December 25, 2023.
  • It is an Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to Criminal Procedure.

Preliminary

  • The Act may be called the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
  • The provisions of the Act, except for Chapters IX, XI, and XII, do not apply to:
    • The State of Nagaland.
    • Tribal areas.
  • However, the State Government may apply these provisions to the whole or part of the State of Nagaland or such tribal areas through notification.

Definitions

  • "Tribal areas" refers to the territories that were included in the tribal areas of Assam, as referred to in paragraph 20 of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution, excluding those within the local limits of the municipality of Shillong.
