Study Notes
Ecological Efficiency
- Only 10 units of energy are available to primary consumers for every 100 units of energy available to primary producers
- Only 1 unit of energy is available to secondary consumers
- Energy is lost as heat during the transfer process
Levels of Organization of Ecology
- Four fundamental levels of organization: individual, population, community, and ecosystem
- Each level of organization has different ecological patterns and processes
Individual Level
- Focuses on how individual organisms are affected by and affect their environment
- Includes organismal ecology, which deals with individual organisms' behavior, physiology, morphology, etc.
Population Level
- Refers to a group of individuals of the same species living in a specific geographic area
- Mortality rate: the rate of deaths in a population
- Population growth: how the size of a population is changing over time
- Types of population growth: exponential and logistic
Exponential Population Growth
- Population size increases by a constant amount over time
- Graph of population size over time is a straight line
Logistic Population Growth
- Population size increases rapidly at first, then slows down and eventually levels off
- Due to the scarcity of resources as population size increases
Population Movement
- Refers to the movement of individuals into or out of a population area
- Emigration: one-way movement of a population out of a particular area
Terrestrial Biomes
- An area of land with a similar climate and similar communities of plants and animals
- Defined in terms of their plants, such as trees, shrubs, and grasses
- Factors affecting biome type: latitude, humidity, and elevation
Types of Terrestrial Biomes
- Forests: Tropical Rainforest, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Tropical Dry Forest, Boreal Forest, Temperate Rainforest
- Grasslands: Savanna, Temperate Grassland
- Deserts: Tropical Desert, Temperate Desert
- Tundras: Alpine Tundra, Arctic Tundra
Aquatic Biomes
- Marine Regions: Oceans, Coral Reefs, Estuaries
- Oceans: largest of all ecosystems, covering about three-fourths of the Earth's surface
- Zones of the ocean: intertidal, pelagic, abyssal, and benthic
Intertidal Zone
- Where the ocean meets the land
- Communities are constantly changing due to waves and tides
Pelagic Zone
- Waters further from the land, basically the open ocean
- Temperature range varies due to constant mixing of warm and cold water
Benthic Zone
- Area below the pelagic zone, but does not include the very deepest parts of the ocean
- Temperature decreases as depth increases toward the abyssal zone
Abyssal Zone
- The deepest part of the ocean
- Light cannot penetrate through the deeper water
