Tissue Categories

Tissues are aggregates of cells working together to perform specific functions. There are four basic tissue types defined by their morphology and function:

  1. Epithelial tissue: Consists of tightly packed sheets of cells that cover surfaces, such as the outer layer of the skin or the lining of the small intestine. Epithelial cells are polarized, meaning they have a top and a bottom side.

  2. Connective tissue: Underlies and supports other tissue types. It is composed of a ground substance and protein fibers, such as collagen, reticular, and elastic. Connective tissue can be classified into two main types: connective tissue proper and specialized connective tissue.

  3. Muscle tissue: Contractile and highly organized into fiber bundles, muscle tissue is essential for movement, pumping blood, and pushing food through the digestive tract. There are three main types of muscle: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.

  4. Nervous tissue: Comprises neurons, glia, and the blood-brain barrier. Neurons are responsible for transmitting information throughout the body, while glia provide support and protection for nerve cells.

Types of Fibers

Connective tissue is composed of various types of fibers, including:

  • Collagen: The most abundant protein in the body, collagen provides strength and structure to tissues.

  • Reticular: Found in the extracellular matrix, reticular fibers help maintain tissue structure and integrity.

  • Elastic: These fibers allow tissues to stretch and return to their original shape, providing elasticity and flexibility to the body.

Tissue Classification

Connective tissue can be classified into three main types based on the composition of its extracellular matrix:

  1. Proper (dense, loose): Consists of dense and loose connective tissue, which differ in the amount of extracellular matrix material and the presence of collagen fibers.

  2. Embryonic (mesenchyme, mucous): Found in developing embryos, these tissues are characterized by the presence of mesenchyme and mucous materials.

  3. Specialized (cartilage, adipose, bone, blood): These tissues have specialized functions and structures, such as cartilage for joint support, adipose tissue for energy storage, and bone for calcium storage and support.

Adipose Tissue

Adipose tissue, also known as body fat, is a type of specialized connective tissue that stores energy in the form of triglycerides. It is found in various locations throughout the body, such as under the skin (subcutaneous adipose tissue) and around blood vessels (perivascular adipose tissue). Adipose tissue is composed of adipocytes, endothelial cells, blood cells, fibroblasts, pericytes, and preadipocytes. White adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue are two types of adipose tissue that differ in their physiological functions and properties.
