Suprarenal Glands: Anatomy
- Location: Suprarenal glands sit atop the kidneys.
- Shape: The right suprarenal gland is triangular, while the left is semilunar.
- Position: The right gland is higher, on the upper pole of the kidney. The left gland is lower and extends towards the renal hilum.
- Relations (Posterior): Both glands are related to the upper pole of the respective kidney and the diaphragm.
- Relations (Anterior):
- Right gland: Inferior vena cava (IVC) and the right lobe of the liver.
- Left gland: Stomach and the body of the pancreas.
Blood Supply
- Anterior Supply (both):
- Superior suprarenal artery (from phrenic artery).
- Middle suprarenal artery (from aorta).
- Inferior suprarenal artery (from renal artery).
Venous Drainage
- Right Vein: Short, draining into the inferior vena cava (IVC). Hilum directed upwards.
- Left Vein: Long, draining into the left renal vein. Hilum directed downwards.
