Summarizing Techniques
- A Summary is a brief overview version of a longer piece of text or content, without including every detail.
- Summarizing Techniques help you understand academic text better.
Basic Rules in Summarizing
- Erase things that don’t matter, delete trivial material that is unnecessary to understanding.
- Erase things that repeat, delete redundant material, if a word or phrase says basically the same thing, you've already written down, don't write it again.
- Substitute superordinate terms for lists, focus on the big picture.
- Write the summary in your own words but make sure to retain the main points.
Summarizing Techniques

Somebody Wanted But So Then: helps generalize, recognize cause and effect relationship, and find the main ideas.
- Who is the text about?
- What did the main character want?
- What was the problem encountered?
- How was the problem solved?
- Tell how the story ends.
