- Characterized by a strong desire or urge to use the substance, also known as craving
- Impaired control, social impairment, risky use, and pharmacological effects
Impaired Control
- Using the substance for a longer period of time than intended or in greater amounts
- Persistent desire to cut down or quit without success
- Significant amount of time spent obtaining, using, and recovering from the substance
- Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities due to substance use
Social Impairment
- Failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home
- Continued substance use despite persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems
- Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities due to substance use
Risky Use
- Recurrent use in situations that are physically hazardous
- Continued use despite persistent physical or psychological problems
Pharmacological Effects
- Tolerance to the substance (increasing amounts to achieve intoxication or decreased behavioral effect at a stable dose)
- Withdrawal (characteristic withdrawal syndrome after stopping substance use or using a drug or medication to prevent withdrawal)
Severity Specifiers
- Mild: 2-3 symptoms
- Moderate: 4-5 symptoms
- Severe: 6 or more symptoms
Remission Categories
- Early remission: symptom-free for at least 3 months but less than 12 months
- Sustained remission: symptom-free for at least 12 months
Non-Substance-Related Disorders

- Essential features:
- Persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges
- Repetitive sexual behavior manifested in one or more of the following:
- Engaging in repetitive sexual behavior despite neglecting health and personal care
- Unsuccessful efforts to control or reduce repetitive sexual behavior
- Continuing repetitive sexual behavior despite adverse consequences
- Continuing repetitive sexual behavior despite little or no satisfaction
- Pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges over an extended period (e.g., 6 months or more)
- Pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges is not better accounted for by another mental disorder or medical condition
- Pattern of repetitive sexual behavior results in marked distress or significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
Addiction
- Characterized by inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one's behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response
- Often involves cycles of relapse and remission
- Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death
- Can be addicted to various substances, such as alcohol, cannabis, inhalants, phencyclidine, amphetamines, cocaine, nicotine, caffeine, opioids, hallucinogens, and other unknown substances
