Substance Abuse

Substance abuse refers to the harmful use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. Alcoholism
- Alcohol is the most widely used substance of dependence worldwide. It can cause physical health problems such as liver damage, heart disease, and cancers.
- Chronic drinking increases the risk of developing several serious diseases such as cirrhosis (liver scarring), hypertension (high blood pressure), and stroke.
- Alcohol also has social costs, creating family discord and domestic violence.
Tobacco Addiction
- Nicotine in cigarettes is highly addictive. Smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer, heart disease, and other respiratory diseases.
- Secondhand smoke exposure increases the risk of respiratory illnesses, ear infections, asthma, pneumonia, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) for nonsmokers.
Illicit Drug Dependence
- Illicit drugs include cocaine, heroin, marijuana, hallucinogens, and prescription opiates. Heroin and prescription painkillers have high addiction potentials.
- Injection drug users face higher rates of transmission of diseases like HIV and hepatitis C.
Prescription Drug Abuse
- Prescription medications are misused when taken in larger doses or more frequently than prescribed, or taken without a prescription.
- Opioid pain medications like oxycodone and hydrocodone have high addiction potentials.
- Overdoses from these medications were involved in approximately 16,849 deaths among Americans aged 15 to 64 years old in 2016.

To address substance abuse, it's essential to understand its causes and risk factors. These may include genetic, environmental, social, psychological, and developmental issues, such as low self-worth, peer pressure, and family history of substance abuse. Effective strategies for prevention and treatment include education programs, policy changes, public health campaigns, and accessible rehabilitation services.
