PPE Requirements
- The St. John's Fire District (STJFD) is discontinuing its program to allow personnel to use non-STJFD-issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) due to more negatives than positives experienced in the 6-month trial period.
- The program was implemented in January 2023, after researching NFPA guidelines and developing an official PPE Approval form and procedures.
- From July 3, 2023, all personnel will be required to wear only STJFD-issued PPE, including:
- Helmets
- Helmet-fronts
- Fluorescent/reflective yellow tetrahedrons
- Eye protection
- Flash hood
- Bunker coat
- Bunker pants
- Structural firefighting gloves
- Structural firefighting boots
- The decision is based on three main reasons:
Safety
- Ensuring personnel wear NFPA-compliant equipment with known history, tracking, and service status to prioritize safety.
Team-Oriented Culture
- Emphasizing a team-oriented culture by having all personnel wear the same uniform, on and off the fireground, to reduce individualization.
Accountability
- Addressing the issue of many personnel not following the approval process for non-STJFD-issued PPE, which undermines accountability.
- Safety, Accountability, and a Team-oriented culture are the top priorities at STJFD, and the current state of the program does not support these priorities.
