PPE Requirements

The St. John's Fire District (STJFD) is discontinuing its program to allow personnel to use non-STJFD-issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) due to more negatives than positives experienced in the 6-month trial period.
The program was implemented in January 2023, after researching NFPA guidelines and developing an official PPE Approval form and procedures.
From July 3, 2023, all personnel will be required to wear only STJFD-issued PPE, including:
- Helmets
- Helmet-fronts
- Fluorescent/reflective yellow tetrahedrons
- Eye protection
- Flash hood
- Bunker coat
- Bunker pants
- Structural firefighting gloves
- Structural firefighting boots
The decision is based on three main reasons:
Safety
- Ensuring personnel wear NFPA-compliant equipment with known history, tracking, and service status to prioritize safety.
Team-Oriented Culture
- Emphasizing a team-oriented culture by having all personnel wear the same uniform, on and off the fireground, to reduce individualization.
Accountability
- Addressing the issue of many personnel not following the approval process for non-STJFD-issued PPE, which undermines accountability.
