- There is no specific legislation in the UK regulating portion sizes, but there are guidelines provided by the Food Standards Agency.
- Recent evidence suggests that many portion sizes in the UK are no longer accurate.
- Some organisations have produced their own guidance on portion sizes.
- Food labels must include all of the following: the name of the food, the weight or volume of the food, storage instructions, a use-by date, and the manufacturer's name and address.
- Food labels must also include a list of ingredients, nutritional information, and any genetically modified ingredients.
- Food labels must be clear and easy to read.
- The front of pack label should list the amount of energy, fat, saturates, sugars and salt in one portion or one unit.
- Low fat means 3g or less per 100g, high fat means 17.5g or more per 100g, low saturated fat means 1.5g or less per 100g, high saturated fat means 5g or more per 100g.
- The RI shows the approximate amount of the nutrients and energy needed for a healthy diet.
- Low sugar means 5g or less per 100g, high sugar means 22.5g or more per 100g.
- Salt should be listed as 1.5g or more per 100g.
