Quantitative Ingredients Declaration

  • A reference to an ingredient in the name of the food does not require quantitative ingredient declaration if it would not mislead or deceive the consumer.
  • The ingoing percentage of an ingredient, by weight or volume, shall be declared on the product label as a numerical percentage.

Label Declaration

  • The ingoing percentage of an ingredient shall be given on the label:
    • In close proximity to the words or pictures emphasizing the ingredient
    • Beside the name of the food
    • Adjacent to each ingredient listed in the ingredient list
  • The percentage shall be declared as a minimum percentage where emphasis is on the presence of the ingredient and a maximum percentage where emphasis is on the low level of the ingredient.

Exemptions from Date of Minimum Durability

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables, including potatoes, are exempt from declaring the date of minimum durability.
  • Wines, liqueur wines, sparkling wines, aromatized wines, fruit wines, and sparkling fruit wines are exempt from declaring the date of minimum durability.
  • Beverages containing 10% or more by volume of alcohol are exempt from declaring the date of minimum durability.
  • Bakers’ or pastry-cooks’ wares that are normally consumed within 24 hours of manufacture are exempt from declaring the date of minimum durability.
  • Vinegar, food grade salt, solid sugars, confectionery products, and chewing gum are exempt from declaring the date of minimum durability.

Date Marking and Storage Instructions

  • The date of minimum durability shall be declared on the label.
  • The date shall consist of:
    • The day and the month for products with a minimum durability of not more than three months
    • The month and the year for products with a minimum durability of more than three months
  • The date shall be declared by the words "Best before..." or "Best before end..." accompanied by the date or a reference to where the date is given.
