Spleen Anatomy
- The spleen is the largest peripheral lymph organ, similar in size to a clenched fist (approximately 150-200 grams).
- It is an intraperitoneal organ connected to the stomach and left kidney by gastrosplenic and lienorenal ligaments.
- It functions like a blood reservoir.
- It is located in the upper left portion of the abdominal cavity (left hypochondrium).
- It is protected by ribs 9, 10, and 11.
- The spleen has a long axis aligned with the 10th rib.
- About half of the spleen's cells are monocytes and a quarter are lymphocytes.
- The spleen's volume is approximately 240 ml, housing red blood cells.
- The spleen's hilum, located on its visceral surface, is close to the tail of the pancreas.
Splenic Artery
- The splenic artery is the largest branch of the celiac trunk, having a highly convoluted (tortuous) path in the body.
- The artery initially descends slightly, then travels horizontally towards the left, passing above the neck, behind the body, and along the pancreas's tail.
Short Gastric and Left Gastroepiploic Arteries
- Short gastric branches and left gastroepiploic branches traverse the gastroesplenic ligament.
- Short gastric branches supply the stomach's fundus.
- Left gastroepiploic branches run along the stomach's greater curvature.
- The splenic artery, tail of the pancreas, and lienorenal ligament are closely related structures.
Splenic Vein
- Part of the portal venous system; a main branch involved in its formation.
- It receives blood from the stomach, pancreas, and inferior mesenteric vein.
- It travels behind the neck of the pancreas and in front of the inferior vena cava.
- It connects with the superior mesenteric vein to form the portal vein.
