Study Notes

Types of Pronouns

  • There are four types of pronouns: subject pronouns, reflexive pronouns, direct object pronouns, and indirect object pronouns.

Subject Pronouns

  • Replace nouns in a sentence.
  • Examples: I, you, he, she, we, they, él, ella, usted, nosotros, vosotros, ellas, ellos.
  • Note: In Spanish, subject pronouns can be omitted if the verb ending indicates the subject.
  • Used in circumstances such as:
    • Emphasis: ¿Y qué crees tú? (And what do you think?)
    • Clarity: Ella se ha roto la pierna. (She has broken her leg.)
    • Contrast: ¿Yo hablo español pero él no lo habla? (I speak Spanish but he doesn't.)
    • Standing alone: ¿Yo? No me digas. (Me? You're kidding.)

Reflexive Pronouns

  • Examples: myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
  • Used to indicate the subject is performing the action on themselves.
  • Typically placed before the verb: Me despierto a las ocho de la mañana. (I wake up at 8 am.)
  • Can be placed at the end of infinitive verbs and gerunds: Tengo que despertarme a las ocho de la mañana. (I have to wake up at 8 am.)

Direct Object Pronouns

  • Replace the person, place, thing, or idea that is the direct object of the sentence.
  • Examples: me, te, se, lo, la, nos, os, los, las.
  • Typically placed before the verb: Me gusta esa falda. (I like that skirt.)
  • Can be placed after the verb in certain cases:
    • After a command: Tráigame el menú. (Bring me the menu.)
    • After an infinitive: Voy a verlo. (I'm going to see him.)
    • After a gerund: Estoy poniéndolos en la mesa. (I'm putting them on the table.)

Indirect Object Pronouns

  • Similar to direct object pronouns, but indicate the indirect object of the sentence.
  • Examples: me, te, se, le, nos, os, les.
  • Answer the question: To/For whom?
  • Used to indicate the recipient of the action: Le dio el libro. (She gave him the book.)

Double Object Pronouns

  • When two object pronouns appear together, the indirect pronoun always comes first.
  • Examples: Te la compraré. (I'll buy it for you.)
  • Special note: le lo changes to se lo.
