Hay, Ser, and Estar

  • "Hay" (Haber) indicates the existence or presence of something or someone.
  • "Ser" describes characteristics of people and places.
  • "Estar" indicates the location of things.

Pronouns After Prepositions

  • Pronouns following prepositions generally match subject pronouns, except for "mí" and "ti".
  • Prepositions include: a, cerca de, de, lejos de, para, sin.

Expressing Obligation, Permission, and Prohibition

  • Prohibition: no se puede + infinitive. Example: En este parque no se puede jugar a la pelota (Playing ball is not permitted in this park).

Direct & Indirect Object Pronouns and the Personal A

  • Direct object pronouns precede the conjugated verb.

  • Example: ¿Dónde pones los envases de plástico? Los pongo en el contenedor amarillo.

  • When an infinitive follows the conjugated verb, the pronoun can be placed either before the conjugated verb, or attached to the end of the infinitive: La lata, la voy a usar para hacer unos aretes / La lata, voy a usarla para hacer unos aretes.

  • With "hay que + infinitive," the pronoun attaches to the end of the infinitive: La lata, hay que tirarla en el contenedor amarillo.

  • The Personal A:

    • Use the preposition "a" before a direct object when it refers to a person or pet.
    • Example: Siempre ayudo a mis vecinos.
    • Example: Mi vecina cuida a mi perro cuando estoy de vacaciones.
  • Indirect Object Pronouns:

    • Translate as: to me, to you, to him/her/it, to us, to you, to them
