Soil Composition

Soil is a complex mixture of various components, including minerals, soil organic matter, living organisms, gas, and water. Minerals

Soil minerals are the primary component of soil composition, making up approximately 40-45% of the soil volume. These minerals come from rocks and are broken down into smaller particles through weathering processes. The three main size classes of minerals in soil are:

Clay: Particles less than 0.002 mm in diameter, which can shrink and swell upon wetting and drying.
Silt: Particles between 0.002 and 0.1 mm in diameter, which contribute to soil structure and water retention.
Sand: Particles between 0.1 and 2 mm in diameter, which provide good drainage and aeration.

Soil Organic Matter

Soil organic matter, also known as humus, is composed of dead plants, animals, and microorganisms in various stages of decomposition. Humus improves soil structure, providing plants with water and minerals and is an essential component of soil quality.

Living Organisms
