Social Security Number Verification
- The DMV will verify your Social Security Number with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- A social security card is the only acceptable proof of SSN for an original CDL (REAL ID or federal non-compliant).

Certificate of Driving Skill (DL 170 ETP)
- An employer authorized by the DMV can issue a Certificate of Driving Skill.
- Both the employee and employer must sign the form.
Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
- The CLP application fee is valid for 12 months from the application date.
- The CLP is valid for a maximum of 180 days and can be renewed for an additional 180 days without retaking the knowledge tests, provided the expiration date does not exceed one year from the application date.
- Scores for passed segments of the skills test are only valid during the initial issuance (first 180 days) of the CLP. Passed segments of the skills test (vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road test) must be retaken if the CLP is renewed.
Combination Vehicles Test
- The combination vehicles test is required if you want to drive combination vehicles.
Hazardous Materials Test
- The hazardous materials test is required if you want to haul hazardous materials, as defined in CFR, Title 49 §383.5.
- To obtain this endorsement, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check.
Tank Vehicle Test
- The tank vehicle test is required if you want to haul any liquid or gaseous materials in a tank or tanks having an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more that is either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis.
Doubles/Triples Test
- The doubles / triples test is required if you want to pull double or triple trailers. Triple trailers are not legal in California.
School Bus Test
- The school bus test is required if you want to drive a school bus.
Firefighter Endorsement Test
- The firefighter endorsement test is required to operate firefighting equipment. It is not required for military motor vehicle equivalents to a CMV on public roads and highways.
Military Waiver of CDL Driving Test
- Qualified applicants must submit a completed CDL Certification for Military Waiver of CDL Driving Test (DL 963) and a Commanding Officer’s Certification of Driving Experience (DL 964) forms in addition to any other documents required for a CDL.
- Active duty members will need to provide their military identification (ID) while veterans will need to provide a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214) which shows their discharge was within the last year.
- These forms are available at dmv.ca.gov.
CDL Skills Test
- The CDL skills test will not be waived for an “S” and/or “P” endorsement.
- The use of electronic devices, such as cell phones, Bluetooth, CB radios, Apple Watch, etc., is prohibited during the commercial skills test.
- People waiting in the testing vicinity are prohibited from using hand signals and shouting instructions.
- The test will be discontinued and marked as a commercial skills test failure if the following occur:
- Use of electronic devices.
- People waiting in the testing vicinity using hand signals or shouting.
- Markings on the vehicle used for the test that help pass the vehicle inspection or basic control skills test, including writing on the vehicle, tape, paint markings, markings on curbs, walls, or trees.
- The use of any recording device, including a video event recorder (dash cam), is prohibited during any commercial skills test.
- There is no additional fee for retaking the vehicle inspection test on the same application.
Basic Control Skills Test
- You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle.
- You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it within a defined area.
- These areas may be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar.
- The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done and you will be scored on your ability to properly perform each exercise.
- The test takes approximately 30 minutes.
- Failure of any portion of the skills test ends the test.
- A retest fee is due for each basic control skills retest.
Road Test
- You will be tested on your skill to safely drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations on a DMV specified route.
- The test takes approximately 45–60 minutes and includes:
- Left and right turns
- Intersections
- Railroad crossings
- Curves
- Up and down grades
- Single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways
- The examiner will tell you where to drive.
- If you fail the road test, a retest fee is charged for each additional road test.
Medical Documentation Requirements
- CDL drivers in interstate commerce and drivers applying for, or who hold, a certificate to drive a School Bus, School Pupil Activity Bus, Youth Bus, General Public Paratransit Vehicle, or Farm Labor Vehicle must use the medical examiners listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry).
- The National Registry is a federal program that establishes requirements for healthcare professionals performing physical qualification examinations for CMV drivers.
- The program, developed to improve highway safety and driver health, requires medical examiners to be trained and certified so they can determine a commercial driver's medical fitness for duty, meeting federal standards.
- If you are required to have a CDL as part of your job, your employer should pay the cost of the examination unless it was performed before you applied for the job.

California Commercial Driver License (CDL) Application Requirements
