Sinkholes are sunken or holes in the surface of the earth due to natural or artificial phenomena. They can be formed through natural processes, such as gradual rock dissolution, or through artificial processes, such as broken pipes or reckless mining.

The most hazardous classification of sinkhole is the cover collapse sinkhole, which occurs in spaces where sand or layers of clay cover the bedrock.

The three major types of sinkholes are solution sinkholes (dissolution sinkholes), cover collapse sinkholes, and cover subsidence sinkholes.
