Definitions
- Manager: Direct supervisor, Lieutenant or Captain
- Exempt Employee: Not entitled to overtime pay
- Non-Exempt Employee: Entitled to overtime pay
- Member: Includes exempt, non-exempt employees, and volunteers
Verbal Warning
- Manager can meet with a member to discuss performance, conduct, or attendance issues
- Manager should outline expectations and corrective action steps for improvement
- Manager must document meeting within 5 business days
- Member must sign the document acknowledging understanding of issues and corrective action plan
Written Warning
- If a member does not correct issues after a verbal warning, a written warning may be issued
- Manager will review additional incidents and relevant corrective action plans
- Manager will outline consequences for continued failure to meet expectations
- Manager will issue a formal performance improvement plan (PIP) or disciplinary action notice (DAN) within 5 business days
- Written warning may include a statement that further discipline, including termination, is possible
Suspension
- Manager must seek approval from the Human Resources department before suspending a member
- Exempt employees may be suspended for:
- Violations of significant safety rules
- Infractions of workplace conduct rules
- Violations of state or federal laws
- Serious misconduct (not performance or attendance issues)
- Non-exempt employees may be suspended for the same reasons as exempt employees and for performance issues
- Suspensions must be in full-day increments
