Sexual Development
- Sexual development in the embryo and fetus is determined by the sperm's chromosome.
- A sperm carrying an X chromosome will result in female development (ovaries).
- A sperm carrying a Y chromosome will result in male development (testes).
- Puberty is a period of rapid physical and sexual development. It begins at different ages for boys and girls.
Puberty Stages in Girls
- Stage 1 (Age 8 to 11): Ovaries enlarge and begin hormone production, no visible development yet.
- Stage 2 (Age 8 to 14): Breast development begins, pubic hair may appear, and growth in height and weight occur.
- Stage 3 (Age 9 to 15): Breasts continue to grow, pubic hair becomes courser and darker, and whitish discharge may occur in the vagina. The first menstrual period (menarche) may begin.
- Stage 4 (Age 10 to 16): Aureoles become darker and may separate into little mounds, pubic hair begins a triangular pattern, and ovulation starts.
- Stage 5 (Age 12 to 19): Full height is reached, ovulation becomes regular, pubic hair is fully grown, and breasts are fully developed.

- Stage 1 (Age 9 to 12): Male hormones become active, a growth spurt begins, no visible development yet.
- Stage 2 (Age 9 to 15): Increase in height, body shape changes, muscle tissue development, and the development of pubic hair occur.
