Self Development
- Is the process of consciously improving oneself in various aspects of life.
- Purpose is to improve personal skills, competencies, talents and knowledge
Self Concept
- Is the individual's belief about themselves, including their attributes and who and what the self is.
- It is an overarching idea about who we are - physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and in terms of any other aspects that make up who we are.
- Develops through interaction with others, the stories we hear, and through media.
- Can be changed through our environment and through interactions.
3 Components of Self Concept
- Perceived Self: How the person sees themself and how others see them.
- Real Self: How the person really is
- ** Ideal Self:** How the person would like to be
Self Assessment
- Is the act or process of analyzing and evaluating oneself or one's actions,
- Helps to put challenges into perspective and identify strengths
Social Identity
- Who you are based on your membership in social groups.
- References groups establish role expectations and norms that guide the individual's behavior within each of the social groups
Self Esteem
- How much you like, accept, and value yourself.
- Contributes to your self-concept.
- Can be affected by how others see you, how you think you compare to others, and your role in society.
Values
- Beliefs that we hold to be true.
- Noble ideals that we struggle to attain and implement in our daily lives.
- Derived from natural and moral laws, not from individual opinions and feelings.
Value Education
- Based on a rational understanding of the human person, specifically on understanding the Filipino as a human being in society and their role in shaping society and the environment.
Theories of Value Formation
Psychoanalysis Theory (Sigmund Freud)
- Core belief is that all people possess unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and memories.
- Suggests that people can experience catharsis and gain insight into their current state of mind by bringing the content of the unconscious into conscious awareness.
Behavioral Perspective (John Watson)
- Suggests understanding development through observable behavior and external stimuli in the environment.
- If we know the stimuli, we can predict the behavior.
Social Learning Theory (Albert Bandura)
- When we see the behavior of a model being rewarded, we are likely to imitate that behavior.
Cognitive Theory (Jean Piaget)
- The human mind is like a computer - constantly processing and encoding data.
- When a person experiences stimuli, their minds will look toward prior schema.
Sociocultural Theory (Lev Vygotsky)
- Social interaction plays a key role in psychological development.
- Suggests human learning is largely a social process and that cognitive functions are based on interactions.
Ecological Systems Theory (Urie Bronfenbrenner)
- The environment you grow up in affects every facet of your life.
- Social factors determine your way of thinking, the emotions you feel, and your likes and dislikes
Humanism Theory
- People have a natural tendency to make decisions about their lives and control their own destiny.
Evolutionary Theory
- Behavior is strongly influenced by biology and evolution.
- Characterized by critical or sensitive periods.
