Study Notes

Seed Plant Body Structure

  • Composed of three organs: leaf, stem, and root.

Plant Meristems

  • Plant growth is limited to specific regions where cells retain the capacity for continued cell division.
  • Unlike animals, which have a generalized growth pattern.

Sclerenchyma

  • Function: provides mechanical support (strength) due to thick lignified secondary walls.
  • Contain large amounts of cellulose and lignin.

Sieve Cells and Plates

  • Contain many pores that allow for cell-to-cell solute transport.
  • Sieve plates consist of primary pit fields and occur in the end walls of cells.

Primary Meristems

  • Apical meristem of the root organizes to form three primary meristems:
  • Protoderm: gives rise to the epidermis.
  • Procambium: produces xylem and phloem.
  • Ground meristem: produces the cortex.
