Science Fair Project

The Science Fair

• The science fair was a big hit, and Jack and the narrator got an A for their project, the Spud Lamp
• The project was set up in the gym, along with other projects, similar to the Egyptian Museum setup
• The narrator felt anxious about facing the parents, who were coming to see the projects

School Events

• The narrator didn't like school events that included parents, like the Thanksgiving Sharing Festival, because they made them feel like they were on display
• The winter concert was another event the narrator didn't enjoy, as they had to sing in the chorus
• The New Year Art Show was another event where the narrator felt like they were on display

The "War"

• The "war" refers to a period of time when the narrator and Jack weren't getting along with some kids in their class
• The kids, led by Julian, started leaving mean notes in the narrator's and Jack's lockers
• The narrator and Jack fought back with their own sarcastic notes, but didn't report the mean notes to the dean

Changes in School

• The narrator realized that people were being kinder and more accepting

Hearing Aids

• The narrator needed to get hearing aids, but was resistant to the idea
• The hearing aids were specially designed to fit the narrator's ears, which are differently shaped
• The narrator was unhappy with the appearance of the hearing aids, which looked like headphones
• However, after turning them on, the narrator was amazed by the difference in their hearing and the reduction in background noise

Family Conflict

• The narrator's sister, Via, got into a fight with their mom about not telling her about a school play
• The fight was about trust and secrecy, and the narrator could hear the argument from another room
