    Study Notes

    Science Curriculum (IX and X)

    • Science is important for developing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills, emphasizing enquiry, creativity, objectivity, and aesthetic sensibility.
    • Upper primary focuses on processes like observing, recording, drawing, tabulation, and plotting graphs. Secondary focuses on abstraction and quantitative reasoning (like atoms/molecules, Newton's Laws).
    • The syllabus is divided into seven broad themes: Food, Materials, The World of the Living, How Things Work, Moving Things, People and Ideas, Natural Phenomenon, and Natural Resources.
    • Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are introduced. Hands-on activities and scientific reasoning are emphasized.

    General Instructions

    • The Annual Examination covers the entire syllabus.
    • The Annual Examination is 80 marks, with 20 marks for internal assessment.
    • Internal assessment includes Periodic Assessments (3 tests, best 2 average); Diverse assessment methods (short tests, oral tests, projects, presentations); Practical/laboratory work (record of work, continuous assessment, all practicals completed); and Student portfolio (classwork, other samples).

    Course Structure (Class IX)

    • The course is divided into units with defined marks:
      • Matter - Its Nature and Behaviour (25 marks)
      • Organization in the Living World (22 marks)
      • Motion, Force, and Work (27 marks)
      • Food, Food Production (6 marks, total 80 marks)
    • Internal assessment is 20 marks.
      • Materials: Focuses on matter, mixtures, chemical changes (e.g., melting, freezing, evaporation). Covers atoms, molecules, atomic number, mass number, isotopes.
      • The World of the Living: Covers cells (prokaryotic, eukaryotic, organelles).
    • Overall, grand total is 100 marks.

    Course Structure (Class X)

    • The course is divided into units with defined marks:
      • Chemical Substances-Nature and Behaviour (25 marks)
      • World of Living (25 marks)
      • Natural Phenomena (12 marks)
      • Effects of Current (13 marks)
      • Natural Resources (5 marks)
    • Internal assessment is 20 marks
    • Different units cover topics like chemical reactions, the living world
    • Overall, grand total is 100 marks.

    Important Note for Teachers

    • Natural Resources chapter (Chapter 14 in NCERT) is not assessed. Nonetheless, brief write-ups for the chapter can be included in the portfolio.
    • Information in boxes within the NCERT books enhance understanding but are not assessed.
