Study Notes
SCBA Components and Inspections
- The type of BA used is a self-contained open circuit, positive pressure breathing apparatus.
- The 4 components of the breathing apparatus are:
- Mask
- Cylinder
- Back pack (Frame)
- Regulator
Visual Inspections: Mask
- Inspect rubber for a tight seal and secure fit to the lens ring
- Inspect head harness
- Inspect lens for scratches, deformation, and color change (HUD)
- Check Light ports are undamaged
- Ensure Nose cup is in correct disposition
Visual Inspections: Cylinder & Valve Assembly
- Inspect rubber boot is present and dove tail is not damaged or cracked
- Inspect gauge face and needle
- Inspect cylinder valve
- Ensure Pressure relief valve is secure
- Inspect cylinder body for cracks, damage, faceplate, whims label, or discoloration
- Hydrostatic test date should be within 5 years
- Pressure Reducer with low pressure warning device should be present
- Inspect pressure relief valve (Label is not damaged)
- Inspect hose and connections, ensuring O-ring is present on High-Pressure connection
Carrier and Harness Assembly
- Ensure bell is properly aligned and screws are tight
- Operate latch on cylinder band to ensure it opens and closes properly and holds the cylinder securely
- Inspect backplate & power module/pressure reducer are secured
- Inspect all harness components (straps, lumbar pad, hoses, buckles, regulator keeper & chest strap)
- Ensure Speaker Module is attached and secure to shoulder strap
- Inspect TIC Sensor for cleanliness and freedom from debris
- Control Module should be undamaged
Regulator (Demand Valve)
- Ensure it is free of moisture and debris
- Seals (Orange & grey) should be present and functional
- Bypass function should be operational
Power Module
- Inspect for damage
- Inspect LED's on all sides
- Ensure black O-ring is present on battery
- Functional test: insert battery, wait for unit to power on, then turn off
Functional Tests
- Check cylinder pressure is full (Above 4000PSI)
- Open Cylinder valve and listen for alarm on up-swing
- Allow gauges to equalize (within 5%)
- Close tank valve and perform 10-second bleed down (no more than 100psi)
- Open bypass and ensure low air alarm engages at 3537% of rated bottle capacity (1575PSI)
- Alarm functions audibly until 200 PSI or less
- Allow control module to remain motionless for approximately 18-20 seconds and verify PASS pre-alarm functions
- Verify buddy lights are flashing red
- Verify red LED is flashing in the HUD
- Verify White LED illuminates
- Verify shaking control module does not silence PASS
- Check manual activation of the PASS alarm by pressing and holding the alarm button on the front of the control module until the alarm activates
