Scapula Overview
- The scapula is a flat bone located in the shoulder girdle.
- It has two surfaces: lateral and medial.
- It has three borders and three angles.
- The lateral surface (also called the posterior surface) contains two fossae: the supraspinous fossa (the smaller one) and the infraspinous fossa (the larger one).
- The infraspinous fossa contains the infraspinatus muscle, a muscular groove, a nutrient foramen, and a vascular groove.
Medial Surface
- The medial surface faces the serratus ventralis muscle which attaches to it.
Angles
- The scapula has three angles: cranial, caudal, and vertebral.
Vertebral Angle
- The vertebral angle contains:
- The glenoid cavity which is a shallow depression where the humerus articulates with the scapula.
- The glenoid notch superior to the glenoid cavity.
- The supraglenoid tubercle, located above the glenoid notch, which serves as the origin of the biceps brachii muscle.
- The infraglenoid tubercle, located below the glenoid notch, which serves as the origin of the teres minor muscle.
Coracoid Process
- The coracoid process provides attachment points for the coracobrachialis muscle.
- The coracoid process is present in all animals except for horses.
Acromion Process
- The acromion process is part of the spine of the scapula and is present in all animals.
