    Study Notes

    SC253: Ecology and Environmental Problems

    • Course was held October 28, 2024, by Professor Amy L. Frick.
    • Agenda included panel discussions, a lecture on evolution, the biological magnification case study "The Day They Parachuted Cats into Borneo," and a group activity on mesocyclops.

    Housekeeping

    • Ecological footprint essay due October 21. Late submissions accepted.
    • Students will give a 20-minute panel presentation on either November 18th or 25th. Subjects are randomly assigned.
    • On the non-presenting day, students conduct a peer review of a classmate's presentation.
    • Students with extenuating circumstances can request a different presentation date. If they do not notify the instructor by November 4, they have lost the option.
    • Students who miss their presentation without properly notifying the instructor will receive a grade of 0 and will not have the chance to redo the assignment.

    Schedule

    • October 28: Evolution, biological magnification, mesocyclops.
    • November 4: Carbon, climate change.
    • November 11: Water, nitrogen.
    • November 18: Presentations, Day 1.
    • November 25: Presentations, Day 2.
    • December 2: Final exam.
    • December 9: No class meeting; last day for submission of overdue assignments.

Topic: "Cats are better than dogs" - Panel Discussion Structure

    • 1. Introduction (1-2 minutes): Introduce the topic, its significance, and define terms.
    • 2. Pro (Cats): State your position and give evidence. (4-5 minutes)
    • 3. Con (Dogs): Give counter-arguments with evidence. (4-5 minutes)
    • 4. Pro (Cats - Rebuttal): Respond to Con arguments, analyze and offer your input. (2-3 minutes)
    • 5. Con (Dogs - Rebuttal): Respond to Pro's rebuttal (optional). Summarize your viewpoint (2-3 minutes).
    • 6. Q&A: Be ready to discuss your position on the assigned topic.

    Evolution

    • Evolution is the change in gene frequency from one generation to the next.
    • Selective forces include random mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, and natural selection.
    • No variation leads to no evolution.
    • Additional examples are Founder effect, and Bottleneck effect.
    • Natural Selection requires variation, and an environment that favors a trait based on favorable conditions.
    • Example of adaptation: Having pointy ears to improve a creature's ability to hear bugs that are hiding.

    Fitness

    • Fitness is an organism's ability to survive, find a mate, and produce viable offspring.
    • The fittest organism depends on the environment it lives in.
    • The fittest individual is not necessarily the strongest, fastest, or biggest organism in a population.

    Biological Magnification

    • The concentration of toxins and heavy metals increases as they move up a food chain.
    • The top predators in the food chain are most affected and exposed.
    • A true story example is presented with the usage of DDT to control mosquitoes and unforeseen side effects.
    • DDT is a persistent toxic chemical.

    Co-evolution/Co-adaptation

    • Co-evolution and co-adaptation are evolutionary processes where two or more species influence each other's evolution.
    • An example is observed in monarch butterflies and birds.
    • Monarchs are not palatable to birds, while mimicking the appearance of the toxic organism gives a similar advantage.
    • Humans can alter species, like GMO's.

    Artificial Selection

    • Artificial selection is the process where humans choose desirable traits in organisms and breed them to pass on those traits.
    • Examples given with Corn, and IGF-1 levels in dogs.

    Mesocyclops

    • Mesocyclops are a type of zooplankton that can be used for biological pest control.
    • The use of mesocyclops is environmentally and economically sustainable to consider before using them in natural pest control.
