License Classes
- Class A Commercial Driver License: Required for operating tractors or trucks with a combined weight of 26,001 lbs or more, and a towed vehicle exceeding 10,000 lbs.
- Class B Commercial Driver License: Necessary for vehicles weighing 26,001 lbs or more, with towed vehicles under 10,000 lbs.
- Class C Commercial Driver License: For vehicles under 26,001 lbs, primarily for transporting hazardous materials.
- Class D Non-Commercial Driver License: Allows operation of non-commercial cars and trucks under 26,000 lbs; also covers three-wheel vehicles.
- Class E Non-Commercial Driver License: For single-unit vehicles over 26,000 lbs, including trucks and motor homes; includes three-wheel vehicle operation.
- Class F Non-Commercial Driver License: For combination vehicles exceeding 26,000 lbs, inclusive of trucks and trailers; allows three-wheel vehicle operation.
- Class M Non-Commercial Driver License: Required for operating two-wheel motorcycles, motorcycles with sidecars, or three-wheel vehicles.
- Class G Non-Commercial Driver License: Allows operation of mopeds; valid driver's license or permit in other classifications exempts the need for a Class G license.
Driver's License Regulations
- Each driver may hold only one valid driver's license endorsed for multiple classifications; holding multiple valid licenses is illegal.
- If licensed for both motorcycle and another vehicle, the license will have endorsements for both after passing respective driving tests.
Beginner's Permit
- Minimum age to apply is 15; required documents include birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency, plus a knowledge and vision test.
- Applicants under 18 need parental consent for the application process.
- A beginner's permit must be held for 180 days before qualifying for a full driver’s license.
- With a beginner's permit:
- Operate vehicles from 6 a.m. to midnight with a licensed adult (21+ with one year of experience) in the front seat.
- Drive motorcycles or scooters from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (8 p.m. during daylight savings) with additional supervision rules for certain vehicles.
- A six-month suspension applies for traffic violations totaling six or more points.
Identification Card
- Issued to residents aged five and older; valid for U.S. citizens for five years from the issue date.
