Study Notes
Root Systems: Types Based on Origin
- Taproot System: Develops from the primary root, which grows vertically downward.
- Fibrous Root System: Arises from numerous adventitious roots that originate from the stem or lower nodes.
- Adventitious Roots: Roots that develop from any part of the plant other than the radicle.
Root System Structures
- Primary root: The first root that emerges from the seed. It is crucial for developing the taproot system.
- Secondary root: Branches that arise from the primary root, forming a taproot system.
Regions of the Root Tip
- Root Cap: Protects the delicate apical meristem as it pushes through the soil. Composed of living cells that are continually sloughed off.
- Apical Meristem: Undifferentiated cells located at the tip of the root. Responsible for increasing the length of the root.
- Zone of Elongation: A region just behind the apical meristem where cells are elongated and increased in size.
- Zone of Maturation: Region where cells differentiate into specialized cells, forming tissues like the vascular tissues (xylem and phloem).
- Root Hair Zone: An area where root hairs, tiny projections that increase the surface area for water and nutrient absorption, develop.
