Blast of Rice
- Caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc (= P.oryzae Cavara)
- Also known as Magnaporthe grisea:
- Imperfect stage
- Perfect stage
- Significant economic impact, with losses ranging from 30% to 61% depending on the stage of crop infection
- Affects various parts of the rice plant: leaves, nodes, rachis, and glumes
- Leaf blast:
- Small bluish-green flecks appear on leaves
- Flecks enlarge under humid conditions, forming distinctive spindle-shaped spots with dark brown margins
- Nodal blast:
- Spots merge, leading to large areas of leaf drying and withering
- Spots also develop on the sheath
- Severely infected nodes may break, causing death of plant parts above the infected area
- Neck blast:
- Fungus attacks the peduncle during flower emergence
- Lesion turns brownish and black, referred to as neck rot or panicle blast
- Glume blast:
- Small brown to black spots develop on the glumes
